About Online Courses

General Information:

Online courses at YCCC are classes that are offered over the internet, which means that you can complete your weekly assignments at the time and place that is most convenient for you! Standard classroom books and printed materials are typically used in combination with online lectures, weekly learning activities, and interactive class discussions.

Just as every classroom differs slightly, so does the distance learning experience. Some courses have formal lectures that are entirely text-based, while other lectures may contain a combination of text, graphics, sound and video. Many instructors divide course content into highly interactive units that consist of group discussions and other types of learning activities. In all classes, you will communicate with your instructor and fellow students through electronic discussion board postings and e-mail.

Expectations for Online Learning:

In order to take an online course, you will need basic computer skills such as word processing, sending and receiving e-mail, and attaching and downloading files. Because online courses are conducted entirely over the World Wide Web, you will also need reliable access to the internet.

Plan to spend as much time studying and preparing for an online course as you would an on campus course. The content and rigor of online courses requires students to be self-motivated and disciplined; successful online students also possess excellent time management skills.

Pros and Cons

Online courses allow many students to further their education, which is exciting for those who may not be able to travel to campus for a regularly scheduled class. Please consider the following pros and cons before making a final decision about registering for an online class:

Pros:

Cons:

Online courses provide flexibility, allowing you to complete weekly assignments at the time that best suits your daily schedule.

The online format is highly interactive, allowing you to communicate with your classmates and instructors, share ideas and compare resources.

Access to valuable resources is at your fingertips. The internet allows you to find images, audio, articles and a variety of valuable information to share in your online course.

Save money on gas! Since your class is accessed through the internet, where you log in is up to you.

Online courses are easy to forget or set aside for later, which can cause you to fall behind in your studies.

Technology can fail, the power can go out, or your computer can get a virus, which can make logging in to an online course difficult.Instructors will still expect you to turn in your assignments on time, so always have a backup plan in place.

Online courses can be difficult for students who have limited computer skills, a very old computer, or a slow internet connection speed.

Scheduling flexibility is appealing to very busy people, but online courses require a significant time commitment. Plan to spend the same amount of time studying for an online course as an on campus course, which means that you should plan on at least 6 hours of study time per week.
