Supplies needed:
a selection of web sites
to evaluate (it's best to pick a few that can illustrate bias,
inaccuracy, manipulation, etc. to drive home the real need for
evaluation. There are lots of good sites that recommend web
pages like this. One of my favorites is: Evaluating
Web Sites which is compiled by J. Alexander & M. A. Tate
at Widener University.)
a worksheet
for evaluation
Description:
This activity gives
students an opportunity to critically evaluate a web page.
Give a brief lecture on the importance of evaluating web resources
for authority, publisher, purpose, objectivity, and
currency. Demonstrate how to evaluate using the selection
you chose above, encouraging participation if possible. Then
hand out the worksheet and have them evaluate one themselves.
Time needed in class: 50
minutes, including lecture
