How to get a Tutor!

Why Use the LC's Tutoring Services ~ 10 Ways to Get the Most Out of Tutoring

All of our tutoring hours are on a "drop-in" or "by appointment" basis. Follow these easy steps!

  1. Look at a tutor schedule based on subject or course.
If the schedule says "by appointment" please contact us at learningcenter@yccc.edu or 646-9282 ext. 161 to schedule an appointment.
  2. During the tutor time, go to the Learning Center (B202) and reception will direct you to the tutor. If reception is not available, the tutor will have a nametag and sign that will help you to identify them.
  3. Introduce yourself and start working with the tutor.

We have two types of tutors in the LC: Learning Specialists & Learning Assistants.

    • Learning Specialists have obtained at least a Bachelor's Degree and have worked in the field that they tutor.
    • Learning Assistants are YCCC students who have excelled in the subjects that they tutor. LA's have taken the courses that you are taking and they also receive significant training and support to provide excellent service to you!

Why use the Learning Center's Tutoring Services?

Students meet with Learning Specialists and Learning Assistants for many reasons. Some students recognize that they could benefit meeting with someone to improve their skills and enhance their learning. Others find it helpful to meet with someone to make school more "personal" and supplement their classroom experience.

Here are some direct quotes from students ...

"I came here because I was very confused but the tutor helped me so much with my math. Now I know I can do it and it was always there." - YCCC FA07 student

10 Ways to Get the Most out of Tutoring

Preparing for tutoring will help you to make the most out of your session.. Please review the following and the make the best of your tutor time!

1. Bring course materials, lecture notes, textbooks, etc to meet with a tutor

2. Create a list of questions to bring to the tutor - you can do this while you are studying at home.

3. Keep the pencil in your hand! Show the tutor what you know how to do and work out the math problems, accounting logs, etc by trying it on your own.

4. After a session, practice what you have learned outside of tutoring time and class time. Many students think that "study time" is the same as tutor time. This will is not effective learning practice as you will not assimilate new information unless you reinforce new skills.

5. If you don't understand material, ask the tutor to explain it to you in a different manner. Our tutors are trained to consider all learning styles and abilities.

6. Keep reasonable expectations of tutoring. The tutor will not give you answers or help you with assignments. Tutoring enhances learning through scholarly interaction to help you commit information to long term memory and that takes time.

7. Be patient with yourself and others. The "aha" moments happen when you are most able to concentrate and not let frustration, anxiety, or other negative emotions get in the way. Practice stress reduction and mindfulness techniques during tutoring and while you study.

8. Engage - the most effective learning occurs when you feel a degree of interest and curiousity about the subject matter. Research shows that academic engagement is the most indicative sign of achievement and performance. So, don't go to tutoring just because you want better grades, find a way (even if you have to fake it) to conjure interest in the material.

9. Start early and keep good study habits. So often, students start tutoring because they have a big exam or a research paper due in 2 hours! We are all prone to procrastination, however, we will not be able to effectively assist you. Plan ahead and come before that major test or due date!

10. If you are meeting with Writing Specialists - bring two copies of your paper, questions about your paper and the assignment. This will help tremendously!
