General background information

Gathering background information is a good way to familiarize yourself with a new topic.

Short encyclopedia articles can help you to quickly identify concepts, topics, issues, and keywords for brainstorming and topic development.

An efficient way to jumpstart your research!

These encyclopedias are kept in the Reference Collection. Free photocopying is available.

Books, DVDs, CDs, videos

Books and audiovisual material can be great resources for your research project. These sources contain edited and evaluated information all in one handy item.

Materials can be checked out from the Library for three weeks at a time.

If YCCC doesn't have the books you need, you can search the entire Minerva collection and borrow their material for free! Learn more about "patron requesting".

Magazine, newspaper, and journal articles

Articles provide current information, opinion, and research and will help you to build a strong research project.

High quality articles are not usually available for free on the Internet, so access them via our many research databases.

Don't forget: you'll need passwords if you're searching from off campus. If you don't have the password or if you're not sure which database to use, contact a Librarian.

Web sites

Web sites can provide excellent information for your research project, especially if you are working on a controversial topic. Advocacy groups often have useful web pages for pro/con papers.

Be sure to take the time to evaluate the site before you use it as a reference!
